Tree Trimming vs. Tree Pruning

Tree Maintenance:

What's the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning?

What is Pruning?

Pruning is the deliberate removal of loose, dead, or diseased branches from a tree or plant. This is done to preserve the health of the tree, prevent the branches from harming other nearby plants, and ensure human safety. Pruning is a careful science and it should be carried out by a trained expert. When done properly, pruning does not stunt the growth of the plant, but rather promotes growth. For instance, the pruning of fruit trees may actually increase the yield of the harvest.

What is Trimming?

Trimming is the removal of excess and overgrown branches from shrubs, hedges, and trees for aesthetic purposes. It is typically done to maintain the shape and design of the shrub or tree. Trees should be trimmed once or twice a year. It is generally best to trim trees during the dormant season. Utility companies often have to trim trees to prevent tall trees from interfering with power lines.

Tree Care Practices

Trees should be pruned or trimmed in accordance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)’s A300 series of Standards for Tree Care Maintenance Operations. These standards are by ANSI with the help of the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). When hiring a tree services company, make sure that they are familiar with these standards to ensure high quality service.
