A Guide to the Utility Arborist Association

What is the Utility Arborist Association (UAA)?

The Utility Arborist Association is a professional association of tree maintenance professionals. The organization was established in 1974. Utility arborists, in particular, work to guarantee the safe and efficient distribution of energy without any interference from trees or other vegetation. Although electrical utilities are most commonly affected by fallen trees, utility arborists also work to ensure the delivery of oil and gas utilities to commercial and residential properties throughout the country. The organization is led by a volunteer-based Executive Committee.

The Organization's Mission

The Utility Arborist Association:

- Provides educational resources to industry professionals and utility consumers

- Develops best practices for utility tree management

- Identifies research priorities in the field

- Educates policymakers and key stakeholders

- Promotes safe standards in utility arboriculture

Do all UAA members work for the power company?

Although some utility arborists work for the power company, this is not a prerequisite for UAA membership. Utility arborists work in many capacities. Many work for tree contractors and consultants.

Additionally, although many utility arborists also belong to the International Society of Arboriculture, it is not required for UAA membership.
