By ProMatcher Staff
What is the Certified Arborist credential?
The International Society of Arboriculture offers the Certified Arborist designation to qualified and experienced tree professionals. The Certified Arborist designation is only awarded to arborists with at least 3 years of verifiable, full-time experience.
In order to earn the designation of CA, a candidate must:
1. Have three (3) years of practical, full-time experience (or fewer years experience if they have a degree in a related field)
-Experience may come from working for local government agency, utility company, tree care company, nursery, consulting firm, etc.
2. Pass a 200-question exam.
-Topics may include tree biology, tree disease diagnosis, risk assessment, and best practices
3) Adhere to a strict code of ethics.
4) Pay applicable fees.
Maintaining the Certification
The Certified Arborist (CA) designation is only valid for three years. After the initial three-year period has expired, the arborist must participate in a re-certification process. There are two ways of becoming re-certified.
1. Retake and pass the certification exam
2. Complete coursework (earn 30 continuing education units over the three year period).
