What is a Stump Grinder?

A stump grinder is a piece of equipment used to permanently remove a tree stump and its shallow roots from the ground. The machine breaks down the stump into tiny pieces with sharp disks that rotate at a high rate of speed.

Professional tree removal companies have very large, powerful machines that can make light work of a large tree stump. Once the stump is removed, the hole can be filled with soil and covered with sod.

For smaller stumps, it may be possible to do-it-yourself. A stump grinder that is roughly the size of a lawn mower can be rented from your local home improvement store or rental shop. This type of equipment should only be used by experienced DIY-ers with the proper safety gear. Also, before grinding the stump, make sure that no power lines will be disrupted.
